The requirements for certified nursing assistant programs are determined by each state’s nursing board. Most states require at least 150 hours of training before a student can attempt to take the certification examination. Certified nursing assistant training is offered by colleges or vocational schools and most last around two to three months depending on acceleration. Many college programs offer a combination of online and classroom setting classes in which students are introduced to both the medical curriculum and procedural requirements of the field. All accredited programs must also include a clinical portion in which students are introduced to a real clinical facility and take part in real life CNA tasks. Training is typically handled by a registered nurse and testing is usually done in a predetermined location where all students can be supervised during examination.

Once a student has completed all of the training requirements, he or she can then attempt to take the certification examination which must include both a multiple choice and clinical portion. Most states cover basic job requirements and common procedures in their certification exams but that will also vary greatly depending on the state in which you live. Basic certified nurse’s assistant tasks include taking and charting patient vital signs, assisting patient’s with basic hygiene and nutritional tasks, assisting patients with mobility restrictions, and communication skills. Most certified nurse assistant jobs require these basic skills and much more but a majority of the learning is done in day to day experiences once you are hired by a facility. The CNA curriculum prepares you for the procedural and clinical aspects of the job but the physical and emotional demands are learned while on the job. Some positions are more difficult than others so you will have to determine which facility and department best suits your training, experience, and personality.

When searching for certified nurse assistant employment opportunities today, you will need to pay close attention to the job descriptions. Some facilities are very vague when it comes to job descriptions in employment ads. If you do apply to a position like this, make sure you get a more detailed job requirement list before you accept a position. You will quickly find that vague job descriptions leave a ton of room for adding duties on to an already very physically demanding job. Many times the certified nurse assistant salary falls short when it comes to all of the work a CNA is responsible to do. The certified nursing field currently has many openings so you should have no problem finding a position that works with your abilities and personality traits. If you are having trouble finding a job on your own, consider enlisting the help of an employment agency.

Most online classes for CNA training are legitimate but you should always double check to find out as much as possible about an available program or institution before you enroll or pay for a class. Many of the CNA classes online today are part of a CNA training or education program which can only be administered by an accredited institution such as a college, university, technical school, or medical school. There are however, various different types of exam preparation websites on the internet which typically offer assistance in examination reviews and tutorials. Some study sites are free but most will charge you a fee for their services. Many are quite helpful in preparing students for what is involved in the CNA examination process and give you a pretty good idea of what you are expected to know.

Most free CNA classes online will not help when it comes to completing the required credit hours toward a CNA certification but they are perfect if you need a little extra help getting ready for the certification test. Such classes are especially helpful for people who have previously failed a certification exam. Even though most people who enroll in an accredited program are likely to successfully pass the examination some people simply have trouble with the examination process. The extra review that many of the CNA classes online for free can provide students is many times worth looking into. Do your homework when looking for CNA courses or a medical assistant school.

CNA to LPN online classes are designed to prepare a nurse’s assistant or certified nursing assistant for the registered nurse examination and certification. There are many accelerated online LPN programs available because most CNA students want to get the higher certification completed quickly. A majority of certified nursing assistants will go on to become an LPN or registered nurse in the future because the pay increase is substantial in many parts of the country. The extra education and certification is a good investment of time and money.

If you do decide to take CNA classes online you should first determine if the class is part of a training program so you can receive credit for taking it. You should also find out if your state will allow you to receive credit for classes you have taken online. Some states do not and require that you receive all of your training in a classroom setting. Most states require that you enroll in 75 hours of training before you can sit down for the certification exam so you definitely want all of your training hours to count towards that goal. The internet is flooded with scammers and you don’t want to pay for something that will not help you in the long run.

In a field that has many closed doors because it requires such high levels of education in order to enter, many have found that a CNA career is actually quite attainable. Most CNA careers simply require that you pass a CNA certification process which must include training in both a classroom and clinical setting. If you have aspirations of someday becoming an LPN or registered nurse then you may want to begin the education process by first becoming a CNA or registered nursing assistant. Many LPNs will tell you that the skills and training one can receive at the CNA level is highly beneficial later if you decide to pursue education and training to become a registered nurse. You can get started with a career in CNA in as little as a couple of months depending on the certification program. Most training programs only last around six to eight weeks or 75 training hours. A fraction of those hours should be spent in a real clinical setting where students get hands on training with real patients and situations.

CNA career opportunities are currently on the rise with many workforce shortages happening around the nation because many certified nursing assistants have gone on to fill the LPN shortages that once plagued our nation’s medical industry. It is estimated that the need for a certified nursing assistant will double in the next few years. The pay may not be great and the duties may seem unimportant but in many medical facilities, a majority of patient care is conducted by the CNA staff. Doctors and LPNs only see the patients a fraction of the time to administer the more complex medical procedures that patients require. The rest of the care comes directly from a CNA including tasks such as feeding, changing, washing, and dressing patients.

Patient care consists of many procedures but what most patients actually need is someone who can help them gain back their treasured independence. Most patients want to heal and get better fast so they can go back to being able to handle their own hygiene and nutritional requirements. In many cases it is the simplest tasks that are the most difficult to accomplish when recovering from a surgery or illness so having an unbiased and compassionate caregiver is by far more important and highly appreciated by most patients.

If you are interested in climbing the CNA career ladder today, contact a local technical career academy, CNA training program, or college for more information. Most schools offer rapid course study, weekend classes, and online courses that can easily fit into anyone’s schedule.

Most nursing assistant programs do not require any previous education other than a High School Diploma or the equivalent. If you are interested in becoming a certified nursing assistant early on in life you can even begin preparing during your high school years. Classes like biology, computer education, and even algebra can better prepare students for nurse assistant jobs in the future. However, the core of the required education and training should come from a community college, technical institute, university, or the American Red Cross. Each type of institution has a different program but all should prepare you to take the certified nurse assistant certification examination. Most states require that you take 75 hours of training including both classroom and clinical training.

In order to apply for all types of certified nursing assistant jobs you must be able to show proof of certification and clinical experience history. Some facilities also require that you show proof of CPR training and TB or tuberculosis testing prior to employment. TB testing is also needed for the clinical training in most CNA training programs because the training is done at a real medical facility. The certification exam will test you for the clerical and procedural requirements of the position. Part of the test is multiple choice questions and the rest is clinical trials where you will need to show how well you know basic procedures, supplies, and equipment of the field. Certification will not be given to any students that do not pass the examination. If you uncertain about your training, you can also enroll in online refresher courses or tutorials which can help you better prepare for the examination.

The career outlook for CNAs is currently quite good. There are plenty of open positions with many areas of the nation suffering from shortages of qualified individuals to fill the positions. Growth is expected in nursing assistant jobs for a very long time because many CNAs go on to study and become registered nurses. The pay increases dramatically at that level so the extra education and certification is definitely a good investment in your future. As the population of the world increases so will the need for caretakers and medical providers. Rehabilitation, long term care, and home health are a few of the areas that will continue to see even more growth as life expectancy increases. More people are living longer lives so there is a continuous increase in the need for medical care for these individuals.

Work as a CNA can be quite difficult with long hours on your feet and very little pay in comparison to all of the work that needs to be done but it is also one of the most rewarding fields to be in. The best place to work as a CNA is in a hospital because that is where you are going to come in contact with the most variety of situations and levels of care. In addition to hospitals, you may be wondering where can a CNA work that can offer a similar level of experience. The answer is easy, rehabilitation facilities are at a close second when it comes to variety of care. You never know what a shift will bring and it is highly unlikely that you will ever get bored in such a facility. It is important to remember that trying out a few different scenarios may be the best way to discover what will work best for your personal abilities, training, and education. You may find that the monotonous routine of nursing homes works better for you because it is also less physically and emotionally demanding.

CNA work requires a certain set of personal traits including high levels of compassion, patience, understanding, good communication skills, and most importantly a devoted focus to the care and comfort of a patient. In long term care facilities, patients will get accustomed to the level of care that you provide and they will also welcome and look forward to your visits. For many the establishment of a routine is crucial to their well being so many will also form a friendship and bond with you. It is highly important to show up for your shifts and to remain consistent in your care no matter how bad your day has been or how little sleep you had. In order to find success in work as a CNA, it is also important to understand that even if a patient does not express gratitude verbally, your care and attention is appreciated. Many are simply afraid to get too close to their caregivers because the turn over rate is very high. Many certified nursing assistants go on to become registered nurses or leave for better paying positions.

Finally, it is important to first become certified and educated in the field before you begin to wonder where do CNA work because that can all change once you enroll in a CNA program. You might find that you prefer home care better or emergency care. The possibilities are endless but your future depends greatly on your education and training. If your goal includes becoming a licensed practical nurse or LPN then you will definitely benefit from the experience you will receive as a certified nursing assistant regardless of the type of medical facility you choose.

The hands-on and personable care found in certified nursing assistant work is one of the number one reasons why so many people have chosen the field. Certified nursing assistant careers are not easy by any means. To begin with, a CNA must be capable of walking, standing, and lifting for long hours. Most shifts are eight to twelve hours long and typically done on rotation of both day and night. Very few facilities offer set scheduling for only day or night shifts. Rotation schedules seem to work best because CNAs are less likely to get burned out and tired of the same routine. Most certified nursing assistant jobs offer good benefits including paid holidays and time off when needed. Some facilities also offer higher pay depending on a certified nursing assistant’s experience and background.

The certified nursing assistant employment requirements vary depending on the type of facility. For instance, a CNA in a hospital is required to perform more procedural and clinical tasks then one working at a nursing home where most of the medical care is done by a registered nurse or doctor. A certified nursing assistant salary also varies depending on the type of a facility. Homecare and hospice CNAs get paid more because part of the job requires travel to and from a patient’s location. Hospice care pays exceptionally well because very few medical providers can handle dealing with the frail condition of most patients. Terminal patients need extra emotional and physical support which can only be accomplished by a small fraction of medical personnel. Many times the emotional aspect of the field takes a greater toll then the physical.

Registered nurses and nursing assistants handle around 90% of the medical care of patients. Doctors have very little contact with patients other than during a surgery or while on rounds. The contact during surgery doesn’t really count because the patient is usually unconscious anyway. During rounds, most doctors only have a few minutes to spend with each patient so the rest of the care is dictated to the nursing staff. CNAs are especially important because they are responsible for maintaining the comfort of each patient. Assisting patients with basic tasks like bathing, dressing, eating, and maneuvering around a room may not seem that important unless you are the patient. The last thing most people want is to depend on someone else especially for the most private tasks like using a bathroom or dressing. A personal pride is quite important but being sick or recovering from a surgery places many people in a difficult position so the help of a certified nurse’s assistant is quite welcome and very often highly appreciated.
